Why this indicator matters

Access to electricity is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for economic development, healthcare, and education.

Currently, millions of people across the African continent still lack access to reliable power. This limits productivity, hinders job creation, and affects the delivery of essential services. Universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy services by 2030 is the core target of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7).

This dataset tracks the progress of 54 African nations from 1990 to the present day, allowing policymakers to identify gaps and monitor the effectiveness of electrification strategies (Grid Extension, Mini-Grids, and Off-Grid Solar).

Definition & Scope

"Access to Electricity" is defined as the percentage of the total population that has a connection to the local electrical grid or a sustainable off-grid source.
